Actually, I Rather Like the Idea of a Death Panel

Is there some kind of super-awesome health insurance company out there I don’t know about providing free policies for everyone who wants one? Or are the town-hall health care protesters all simply idiots?
News flash, idiots: If you have a health care plan from any of the following providers, then the taxpayers are already paying for your health insurance:
- Medicare
- Medicaid
- Veterans Health Administration (VHA)
- SCHIP
- TRICARE
- Military Health System
- Indian Health Service
- FEHB
Additionally, if you have no insurance at all, and receive emergency care that you can’t pay for, taxpayers are paying for that, too.
If you have any of the following types of private health insurance, then a bureaucrat is already standing between you and your doctor:
- Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
- Point of Service (POS) managed care plan
- Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
I can certainly see why insurance companies would object to competition from an entity whose primary motive is quality of care, not profit, but I can’t understand why anyone who does not actually work for an insurance company would object, even if they intend to stick with the insurance they have now. Competition from a government plan can’t reasonably drive costs up, only down.
